Terri Koontz, who lives in Greenville near Botany Woods, said it’s not any harder than other pets — regular feeding and watering and occasional cleaning. Guests to her home, she said, are often surprised that there’s no mess or odor associated with her backyard coop.

She’s had chickens on and off for about a dozen years, she said. She got her current flock — Frizzle, Peg and Too — about three years ago. When the hens were younger, Koontz said she got almost three eggs a day from them.
